What’s your dream job?
Just a few decades ago, there was a clearly defined path for those who desired to build a stable family, have a secure career, and purchase a desirable home to grow old in. The security for this dream was built around what one does for a living! Over the last 20 or so years, the ease and reliability of THAT dream has been quickly fading away. People of all ages and a widening margin of demographics are finding the ‘American Dream’ harder and harder to achieve. When I talk with our youth, they no longer dream of all they passionately desire to do. Instead, they rack their brains for what they can afford in education against what will produce a liveable wage that truly is nearing 6-figures for a small American family.
Unless things drastically change, there may be a need to redefine the once inspiring question of ‘What is your dream job?” to ‘What is your ideal style of living?’
You see, one thing that has tipped in the favor of our youth and those aspiring for change is innovation. Innovation is blooming in both technological advances and career development. Positions and lucrative careers are being built on the dream of innovation and a willingness to pave a new way forward. With this vast and undefined landscape, picking a well-defined career path may be less beneficial to the success of one’s security and happiness.
As a Coach, working with people of all ages, a commonality between all of them is a desire to be happy and feel safe within the foundations of their life (such as enough money to live by, access to health resources, and peace to enjoy their hard work). Even if the consultation is on career change or college direction, we end up coming back to those as the REASON for the introspection.
So, why not start by first assessing, ‘What type of life do I want to have and experience?’ If it is one of travel, then maybe a career that supports and allows that would be good. If it is one of stability and old knowns, then perhaps factory or trade specialties would be a place to start exploring your job options. The goal with this approach is to do the following…
- Put the focus on WHAT you want to experience in life.
- From those qualities, LOOK at what is available to do career wise that would best support that life experience with enough financial stability to enjoy it.
- Remain balanced in your EFFORTS of building your dream life. Remembering the WHY is how you want to emotionally, physically, and mentally experience your life, NOT just WHAT you are committing your working hours too!
